Tania Major
Tania Major is a Kokoberra artist from Kowanyama Cape York Australia who is inspired by the rich cultural heritage and connection to her land/waters. Through her artwork, she explore themes of identity , spirituality, and the preservation of traditional knowledge. Her aim is to create art that fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal culture/lore; of the Kokoberra, Yir Yoront, (or Kokomenjen) and the Kunjen clans, the Traditional Owners and descendants of the Lower Mitchell and Alice River Cape York.
Tania is an activist who first came to prominence in 2004 as the youngest person elected to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC). Born in Cairns, Queensland, she was educated at Clayfield College and Griffith University in Brisbane, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in criminology and criminal justice. In 2007, Tania was named as the Young Australian of the Year, having been earlier named as the Queensland Young Australian of the Year.
